Exposure to trauma or the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) cannot be considered a sufficient cause for radicalization and engagement in violent extremism. Yet, studies have found a prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among right-wing extremists. This session will focus on different situations that can traumatize an individual, both ACEs and experiences in adulthood; how trauma interacts with individuals’ vulnerability to extremism; and how untreated trauma could be a hindrance to safe, healthy, and dignified reintegration processes.
